Business and Service in the Dominican Republic
8-day Educational Tour
This trip is designed for high school, college, and community organizations interested in international business and volunteer service. We will examine businesses large and small, from baseball and sugar cane to corner stores and pawn shops.
Sample Itinerary
For the volunteer portions, past projects have been teaching English, being a camp counselor, building a playground, building a basketball court, public art, painting a school, a community mural, and creating a community garden.
Day One
- Arrive in the Dominican Republic and orientation. Tour major attractions to learn about Dominican history and the role of trade on the island.
- 6 pm: Dinner
- 7 pm: Reflections
Day Two: Sports
- 7 am: Breakfast
- 9 am: Tour a baseball league run by a Dominican who played in one of the academies. Observe training of young players.
- 11 am: Optional: friendly international baseball game.
- 12:30 pm: Lunch
- 1:30 pm: Volunteer at a school or non-profit with young children living in extreme poverty.
- 6 pm: Dinner
- 7 pm: Reflections
Day Three: Sports (cont)
- 7 am: Breakfast
- 9 am: Tour a baseball academy.
- 11 am: Watch a Dominican baseball game and root for your favorite team.
- 12:30 pm: Lunch
- 1:30 pm: Volunteer at a school or non-profit with young children living in extreme poverty.
- 6 pm: Dinner
- 7 pm: Reflections
Day Four: Farming and/or Manufacturing
- 7 am: Breakfast
- 9 am: Tour introducing you to large farming or production (e.g., sugar cane)
- 11 am: Examination of the impact of this industry on the average Dominican employee
- 12:30 pm: Lunch
- 1:30 pm: Volunteer at a school or non-profit with young children living in extreme poverty.
- 6 pm: Dinner
- 7 pm: Reflections
- 8:30 pm: Optional: Friendly American-Dominican basketball game
Day Five: Excursion
- Spend the day as a group enjoying Dominican beaches or other excursions. It will include an examination of the role of tourism in the local economy.
Day Six: Small Businesses
- 7 am: Breakfast
- 9 am: Tour a corner store and learn not just about what they provide but also forms of credit within the community.
- 11 am: Community tour to understand resources and needs within a Dominican neighborhood.
- 12:30 pm: Lunch
- 1:30 pm: Volunteer at a school or non-profit with young children living in extreme poverty.
- 6 pm: Dinner
- 7 pm: Reflections
Day Seven: Small Businesses (cont)
- 7 am: Breakfast
- 9 am: Tour a pawn shop and compare and contrast it with pawn shops in the United States
- 11 am: Dominican-led panel discussion on the underground economy in the Dominican Republic
- 12:30 pm: Lunch
- 1:30 pm: Volunteer at a school with young children living in extreme poverty.
- 6 pm: Dinner
- 7 pm: Reflections
Day Eight: Departure
Return to the United States
These trips have had students attend from areas of Pennsylvania and New Jersey including but not limited to Bucks County, Burlington County, Montgomery County, Essex County, Delaware County, Chester County, Union County, Warren County, and more.
